So many times we cover up our true deepest wants and desires of the heart.
When we do this, it hurts. It hurts our spirit, our soul. So then why do we do this?
- Do we believe it’s not ‘spiritual’ to want?
- Did we forget how to fully allow ourselves to want something when we were children?
- Does our mind get in the way so strongly that wanting isn’t worth the trouble of dealing with the mind?
- You ‘want’ something but it is from a place of emptiness and not a true desire of the heart.
These are common reasons that the true desires of the heart go unnoticed.
Let me explain each one a bit more in detail. First though, why am I so focused on the heart? On how to tune in to and allow yourself to want what your heart wants? Because this is why we are here. This is why we have life. Your heart’s desires are the pathway for you to experience yourself as divine, for you to experience your Essence and to connect with others through this expression.
- Do you believe it’s not spiritual to ‘want’ anything? This is a common pitfall of popular spirituality. Let go of possessions; let go of desires; just be satisfied with what you have. Does this voice take up space in your head? This voice is a stupid voice! The core reason we are here is to experience and manifest the deepest desires of our heart. However, in our current instant gratification materialistic cultures, the whole notion of desire has been distorted. We have been trained to believe that desire is ‘satisfied’ by something outside ourselves. Usually, something we can buy.
- Were you shamed for your heart’s desires at some point along your journey? Were you told they were stupid and wouldn’t earn enough money? Did you learn to make your wants and desires real small so as not to be disappointed?
- As soon as you approach your heart’s wanting does your mind step in and say ‘That’s impossible!” “How are you going to do that/be that/get that?” Does your mind almost immediately interrupt and displace the feeling of your heart? If so, your heart is being suffocated. You may even experience irregular heartbeat.
- You want lots of things but these wants come from a sense of something being wrong in your life. Your wants come from your feeling of emptiness. They come from a sense of lack. These are not your heart’s desires. These are not the longings of your heart.
INVITATION to be with your Heart:
Become still and FEEL your heart. What does your heart long for? You learn about these longings by tuning in to the feelings of your heart. You must deeply focus upon your heart and disregard the mind. List to your heart. It speaks. It has it’s own sweet whisper.
Is there something you know your heart wants but you have not taken time to actually FEEL this longing? You may feel sadness when you tune into your heart’s longing. This is a good thing. The sadness is a pathway toward your desire so long as you protect it from your mental chatter and judgment. Don’t make up some story about it!
Honoring your heart’s true longing, true wants and desires is your #1 responsibility. It’s the deeper path. So if you have not lived from this place, yet know that you now long to go deeper with how you navigate your precious life, practice tuning into your heart.
